Lee Da Yeon

  • Hello, my name is Lee Da-yeon, and I live in Korea. I am 51 years old and a Hanbok designer. I run 'Yeonliji Co., Ltd.', where I also work as a model.

The charm of our traditional hanbok lies in its ability to express the beauty of straight lines and curves, with the advantage of being adjustable in length at any time. I first learned how to sew from my grandmother at the age of five, and at sixteen, I formally learned hanbok making from my aunt at Kyunghee Hanbok in Cheonho-dong, Seoul.

As the chairperson of the 'Let's Play with Korean Hanbok' volunteer group and the 'Let's Play with Jeongga' committee, I promote our traditional culture while running Yeonji Co., Ltd. My interest in hanbok began in childhood, watching my grandmother weave hemp on her loom and make her own hanbok, which she wore daily. At five, I learned basic needlework techniques from her, including how to sew beoseon and the principles of hanbok. I have been passionate about hanbok for 36 years.

Korean hanbok, made with flat cuts, beautifully expresses both straight lines and curves and can be easily adjusted for length. During the COVID-19 crisis, my dedication to hanbok helped me persevere, continuing to create and promote hanbok despite challenges. The royal hanbok, although desired by many, is not easily accessible to the general public. To address this, we have been producing royal hanbok and hosting a royal parade and hanbok fashion show from January 2022 to 2024.

The Korean culture I wish to promote features events where the royal procession of the Joseon Dynasty is accompanied by the sound of Daechwita music, King Sejong's family parades in royal hanbok, and Gagok, our traditional vocal music, is played.

    Thank you.
