Mi Jung Lee

  • Born on September 5, 1971, in a small mountain village, she was the youngest of seven siblings, raised by a dexterous father and a wise mother. In 1990, she learned Catholic doctrine with her sister and became a Catholic after being baptized. She married in 1996, raised three sons, and volunteered at the cathedral.

She fell in love with the charm of folk paintings when she saw Ssanggye-do (a painting of two chickens) by Jung Mi-hyung, her art mentor whom she met while living her faith. Encouraged by her passion, she began learning folk painting. The advantage of folk paintings is their appeal to people of all ages due to their fun and approachable nature.

Folk painting, traditionally created by ordinary people, involves drawing a model and then adding colors, using the Barim technique (a pure Korean technique) to express contrast. Today, folk paintings feature various soft colors and maintain the classic splendor while incorporating personal styles and colors.

She is preparing creative works that combine traditional folk painting techniques with her unique strengths, aiming for delicate and neat finishes. In 2023, she exhibited at the 5th Folk Painting Exhibition and won a special prize in the folk painting category at the 4th Korea Cheongju Art Exhibition.

Through numerous exhibitions and educational efforts, she continues to dedicate time and effort to learning, feeling, and developing her art. Currently, she works as a writer for the Korean Folk Painting Association, promoting traditional Korean folk paintings both domestically and internationally.
